Stocker/Cashier
PetSmart – Durham, NC
July 2004 – May 2005
Job Duties
As the evening stocker, my main task was to finish any leftover freight from the newest delivery. If there was no delivery that day, or it had already been completed, I had to work on putting out some of the overstock. Near the end of my shift, I had to make sure that the store and backroom were clean and neatly organized. My duties also included assisting customers with any questions and providing assistance as needed. On occasion, I was requested to run a cash register.
Transferable Skills Acquired
- Communicating with Customers – I learned a great deal about working with customers. Although I had previous customer service experience prior to this, this was a different type of interaction. Before I merely greeted them and served them. In this position, I was required to answer questions, recommend products, and provide helpful information. I had to learn to think quickly and I had to be knowledgeable of all of the products.
- Time Management – This job also helped me gain more experience with managing my time. Sometimes there was a lot of excess freight and I had to learn to know when to move on with that and complete my other tasks. Although it was vital, I still had to end my shift by cleaning and organizing. I had to plan everything I needed to do that night ahead of time so that I could allow myself enough time to complete my closing tasks.
