Cashier
Harris Teeter – Chapel Hill, NC
September 2002 – November 2003
Job Duties
My primary job duty was to operate a regular register while checking out customers. I had to be courteous to all customers and provide excellent customer service. If it was quiet, I was to organize nearby shelves or bag for other cashiers. I also frequently operated the U-Scan self checkout system as well. While operating the system, I monitored customer activity and assisted them when needed, all while still providing the same customers service as I did when running a regular register. I was also frequently called upon to train associates on the regular cash register and the U-Scan system.
Transferable Skills Acquired
- Customer Service – This was my first experiences in customer service. I can easily say I learned a lot. I learned how to be courteous regardless of my mood or the situation. If the customer was very rude or impatient, I learned how maintain my composure and still provide excellent customer service. My hard work and dedicated customer service earned me Employee of the Month honors once, and a nomination a second time. I can say that my experiences there changed me permanently. Ever since this job, I have found that I am more courteous and respectful, and not just at work. I pretty much call everyone Sir and Ma’am regardless of who and where they are. This job has made me a more professional and courteous person.
- Training Associates – I was really the only non-management associate who had the opportunity to train other associates. I learned a lot from this experience. I trained associates how to operate the regular cash register and the U-Scan system. I would train associates even when I was not asked to do so. Many of the baggers would pass by the U-Scan station and they would stop to learn a few tips from me. In fact, several of the baggers picked up enough experience through these random training sessions that they were occasionally asked to run U-Scan in an emergency. By training these associates, I learned how to teach and instruct.
