LIS4910 - Information Technology Project
Spring 2008
Instructor: Melissa Raulston
This course focused on one main project in which you were sent out into the field to complete an actual project. For this course you were allowed to choose any project you wanted to do, or you could have chosen from a pool of options should you have been unable to come up with your own idea. For my project, I chose to work on one from the pool of options since I could not come up with one myself. For this project you also had the option to work in teams or not. Most other courses in the major required group work, so pretty much all projects I did in the past were done in groups. I learned to enjoy working in groups, but for this project, I decided that I would work alone. Plus the project I chose could really only be done by one person. With me working alone however, I was solely responsible for all work involved and would be held to the same standards as those who were in groups. I realize that most projects in the real world are in groups, but I felt I could learn a lot from working by myself. I felt that there may be an occasion down the line where I might have to work on a project alone, so I felt the skills I would learn from doing this project by myself would be very useful.
For the project we had to write up a detailed project plan and a work breakdown schedule. This project plan consisted of a mission statement, objectives, costs analysis and other project necessities. My project was to work with the Goldstein Library at the College of Information to set up a data collection method for the humidity devices that they use to keep track of temperatures in the library. My project sponsor was the director of the library whom I had to work with throughout the project. I kept her abreast of all project activities and progress I had made on the data collection method I was working on. This was an interesting dynamic as all of the projects I had done before this one were for the instructor only and had been simply for a grade. Granted this project was still for a grade, but this time, I was working on a project that would also correct a real life problem. With this dynamic, I learned a great deal about communicating and working with a supervisor throughout the entire span of a project. This course, and the real project, really taught me a lot about managing projects and gave me a great lesson in how projects are completed in the business world.
